Beritabali.com, Karangasem. Every once a year in Geriana Kauh Village, Selat Sub District, Karangasem Regency performed a very unique and sacred tradition, called Sanghyang Dedari and Sanghyang Jaran Gading Dance.
Sanghyang Dedari Sacred Dance in Geriana Kauh is the only Sanghyang dance that's still routinely staged. And also, Sangyang Dedari sacred dance has gained recognition from UNESCO as world cultural heritage that almost extinct.

"This sacred dance is performed before the Embud Padi "Mase" (red: paddy planted once a year without any crops)," said Jero Bendesa Geriana Kauh I Wayan Brata, when Beritabali.com met him after carrying out the preparation, Sunday (16/4).
"The paddy also different than any kind of rice that usually planted. The Rice species have special characteristics like has larger seeds," he added.
Towards the perform of Dedari Sangyang and Sanghyang Jaran Gading Dance, the procession begin with "matur piuning" (praying) in 10 temples such as Pura Puseh, Pure Pejenengan, Pura Bale Agung, Prapatan, Dalem temple, and others.
Sanghyang Dedari Dance is staged by five girls from the village of Geriana Kauh. The girls must be sacred and never get menstrual bleeding. Meanwhile, Sanghyang Jaran Gading Dance staged by the boy and it based on "pekayuan" (god's instruction) Ida sanghyang Jaran Gading, so the amount of dancer cannot be determined.
Sanghyang Dedari is performed on the night time about 20.00 PM in the area of ​​Catus Pata without gambelan instruments. The dancers only follow the rhythm of song called "gising Sanghyang". 12 people of Geriana Kauh Village will sing the song.
Another unique thing, is the Dancer decoration. Dancer should not wear gold or any such thing. Just wear natural flowers such as frangipani and cananga flowers.
"For the dance line of Sanghyang Dedari and Sanghyang Jaran Gading, first performed "mekukup" procession (inviting the Ida sanghyang), then the dancer will experience "kerauhan" (possessed by sprits). When it happen, the dancers will move dance unconsciously follow the Gising Sanghyang, if the rhythm directed up, then sanghyang Dedari will climb the bamboo that already prepared," Brata added.

Sanghyang Jaran Gading performed at different places. The dance performed in front of Pura Pejenengan Village Geriana Kauh. The Jaran Gading Sanghyang dance is performed by a man who is chosen "niskala" (noetics) by Ida Sanghyang Jaran Gading.
In the dance performances Sanghyang Jaran Gading, also performed ritual "mekukup". After the dancers get possessed, they will run in the staging area by following the strains of Gending Sanghyang. In the midst of staging, Jaran Gading dancers who have been possessed will run through the live coals.
The ultimate goal of this sanghyang tradition is to invoke blessings, prosperity, and salvation especially for the entire Geriana Kauh community. [wrt]
