The members of the Indian Community in Bali celebrated the 70th Republic Day of India at their Consulate in Renon, Denpasar, with traditional gaiety and fervor.
Over 120 Indians, persons of Indian Origin and friends of India, along with 40 school students from the Indian school, GMIS attended the function. The Consul General, Mr. R.O. Sunil Babu, hoisted the Indian national flag, following which the Indian Community and friends of India together sang the national anthem of India, ‘Jana Gana Mana’, written by noble laureate and noted poet Rabindranath Tagore. The students from GMIS rendered patriotic songs ‘“Mile Sur Mera Tumhara to Sur Bane Hamar”. Other patriotic songs were also being played on the occasion.
The Consul General read out the Address of the President of India. Mr. Ram Nath Kovind, delivered on the eve of the Republic Day. In his Address, the President called The Republic Day as an occasion to reaffirm the nation’s commitment to liberty, fraternity and equality across the society and among all the citizens.
The President conveyed that this year celebration of Republic Day is a little extra special as we will mark the 150th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi who inspired oppressed societies in Asia, Africa and elsewhere to freedom from colonial rule. His 150th anniversary is not for India alone, it is a joy to be shared with the world. This year, the people of India will also have another responsibility of voting in general election and election and electing the 17th Lok Sabha.
The president highlighted that an election is a collective call to wisdom and a collective call to action which represents the diverse and yet singular urges of the people and the Republic of India. The president mentioned that India is at the doorstep of eliminating extreme for the first time in memory.
A programme of universal and equitable healthcare are becoming a reality for more and more sections of the people of India. He also mentioned that in the development of India, the nation has converted difficulty to availability whether in foodgrains or LPG cylinders, telephone connections or even availability to get a passport. In many cases, technology has ben a force multiplier and in all cases, inclusiveness has been moral multiplier.
The President also mentioned that India’s pluralism is its greatest strength of inclusiveness and its greatest example to the world. Indian model rests on tripod of diversity, democracy, and development which are inseparable. He also stressed on change towards gender equity and towards providing equal opportunities under conditions of equality of every woman.
Young women in India are moving ahead in every field, from academics to creative arts, from sports to armed forces. He also realized that the nation’s voyage is far from complete despite the Republic has come a long way. The nation has to recalibrate yardstick of achievement and success, from quantity to equality, from a literate society to a knowledge society.
The president also spoke about message written in Mahatma Gandhi’s India of My Dreams’. Gandhi Ji wrote of an India where the poorest will have an effective voice, where there well be no high class and low class, where all communities shall live in perfect harmony, and where women can enjoy the same rights as men. These ideals are constant reminder of the India that the nation is building. The President stated that of India’s nation-building project was aimed at contributing to a better world, enshrining the age-old concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam or the World Being One Family.
He also mentioned that the concept of seva, of devotion to public service must get its due and well-intentioned contributions of individuals, of groups of people, of institutions must be acknowledged and appreciated. All of these are principles that shape India’s global approach and earning India a new respect in the international system.
The live telecast of the magnificent Republic Day parade in New Delhi was also carried out by the Consulate. The attendees thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere which was filled with gaiety. A sumptuous feast of Indian delicacies was served to the guests.
