Beritabali.com, Denpasar. The Australian Consulate-General celebrated International Women’s Day with a High Tea that included local and Australian communities in Bali On Friday, 15 March 2019. The event showcased the Australian Consulate-General’s support in promoting women’s social, economic, cultural and political success, particularly in Bali and West Nusa Tenggara.

This year, UN Women in Australia have identified the theme ‘More Powerful Together’ that recognises the important role women and men play to advance gender equality to create a world where women and girls everywhere have equal rights and opportunities.

The event was opened with a song performed by a choir group of 24 young women from Bali WISE program of ROLE Foundation’s women’s education program followed by remarks from the Australian Consul-General in Bali, Dr Helena Studdert.

“International Women’s Day is a chance to motivate our friends, families, colleagues and communities to think, act and be gender inclusive,” said Dr Studdert in her welcome remarks.

Dr Studdert also explained that the Australian Government is committed to gender equality and women’s empowerment as a top priority for development assistance and foreign policy. Australia’s gender advocacy focuses on enhancing women’s voice in decision making, promoting women’s economic empowerment and ending violence against women.

In line with the theme, the event hosted keynote speaker, Ms Ni Komang Sariadi, Director of Sari Hati Foundation and founder of Pusat Kegiatan Perempuan (PKP) Women’s Centre in Ubud. Ms Sariadi shared her work experience and vision to empower women and bring gender equality to Balinese women and girls.

"In a patriarchal society such as Bali, many divorced women are stigmatised and ostracized in their communities. They are not able to stay in their husband’s village and are not welcome in their own. PKP provides a nurturing and safe place for divorcees to seek comfort and support. The Centre’s goal is to empower women and bring gender equality to Balinese women and girls," Added Dr Studdert.

The International Women’s Day event was attended by representatives from the Bali Province, City and Regencies in Bali, and members of female business associations, Australian business and volunteers as well as the greater Balinese community. (bbn/rls/rob)
